Start at the very beginning • Enable pupils to have a sense of progress from the very beginning of their language study • Make self assessment a regular part of pupils’ language learning experience, and make it fun and accessible. • Help pupils to become self reflective • Target flag • Learning log

  3. Attainment targets or objectives? • Create resources which enable pupils to assess their progress in specific areas. These do not have to be formal assessments • What do you emphasise to pupils – objectives or attainment targets? • Which do you want to focus on?

  4. 04.3 Identify and compare specific sounds • Create resources to help pupils assess their ability in a particular area. • Share the assessment criteria with pupils. • Pupils assess how confident they feel as they complete the exercises • Teacher can record objectives which pupils have achieved, and pupils assess themselves after a particular task

Target setting • Use summative self assessment to enable pupils to set personal targets at the start of the academic year • Enable pupils to set differentiated targets – APP techniques • Ensure pupils can engage with national curriculum levels – displays of child-friendly versions in the classroom.

  6. Peer and self assessment • USE OF VIDEO • Pupils agree on the assessment criteria to evaluate each others’ work. As pupils develop their peer assessment skills they will become more adept at self assessment

Peer and self assessment in action • The teacher is using two stars and wish for peer and self assessment • Pupils are assessing whether they can change the infinitive to the present tense in German, and say what they like and don’t like. • The teacher gives them some examples. • Peer assessment prepares for and complements self assessment • Pupils are engaged in active listening, and peer assessment motivates pupils to take part in a simple activity
