  1. Robotic Systems Concept Supporting Asteroid Redirect Mission EVA Asteroid Initiative Idea Synthesis Workshop November 21, 2013

  2. MDA On-Orbit Servicing Heritage

  3. Required Systems to Support EVA • Notional Crewed Mission with Orion MPCV includes 2 EVAs and can be broken into the following operational steps: • Crew Translation • Asteroid sample collection • Mating two spacecraft • Secure to Worksite • EVA preparation and egress • Inspect and assess asteroid (Credit for all images except asteroid assessment: NASA)

  4. Robotic Manipulator Systems • Many TRL-9 systems can be adapted to support functions: • Initial capture and berthing of the Orion MPCV or Asteroid Retrieval Vehicle (ARV) spacecraft • Astronaut translation, positioning, and support for asteroid access • Astronaut and tool system stabilization • Site inspection and preparation • EVA Tool and Sample storage (Image Credit: NASA)

  5. Off-nominal/Extended Robotic Capabilities (Credit for all images: NASA)

  6. ARM Manipulator Concept • MDA has developed a manipulator compatible with limited stowage space such as on the Orion MPCV: • Supported by CSA and in collaboration with Lockheed Martin • Lightweight, compact design • Leverages both human spaceflight heritage systems (SRMS, SSRMS) and smaller lightweight unmanned manipulator (Orbital Express, Hubble Robotic Mission) • Suitable for both MPCV and ARV • Telescoping boom concept built and demonstrated as part of Next Generation Canadarm (NGC) program (Image Credit: Boeing)

  7. EVA/EVR Tools and Aids • Crewed Mission can leverage extensive heritage in EVA and EVR tools, tool tips and EVA aids to support • Translation and securing to the worksite • Accessing the asteroid through the capture system • Sample collection • Asteroid imaging, scanning and data collection (Image Credit: NASA)
