Enhancing Agriculture as broad-base rural growth • Fostering growth in non-farm growth sector Improved seed systems and fertilizer supply (promotion of small packages, farmer to farmer seed diffusion and seed growers association) • Linkages with agro processing: Crops to Shops Boosting ICRISAT/NARS bred sorghum, millet and groundnut varieties for processing an industrial use:Malting, brewing ,SORBIS cookies (100% sorghum), Infant foods, sorghum rice, edible oil mills [IFAD]

Enhancing Agriculture as broad-base rural growth • GRV now under control—Nigeria & Senegal groundnut pyramids revived [Genebank in Niamey] • Safe to eat: Improved competitiveness of groundnuts Improved management to reduce Aflatoxin levels (ELISA) • Millet (SOSAT)—boost millet yield by 30-50% • Intensification of smallholder irrigation (Af. Mkt Gardens, Dates/fruit trees/vegetables for the Sahel) • Enhance better quality and increase quantity of feed and seed in Crop-livestock systems (dual purpose crops with high nutritive value developed)

Enhancing Sustainable NR base and Water use • Promoting micro-dosing and Revolving Micro- credit Scheme “Warrantage” ICRISAT/FAO Projet Intrant as incentives to increase fertilizer rates [millet yields increased by 200%] • DMP to combat desertification [ 5 countries in WCA] New science tools (spatial and bio- economic models) to understand extent land degradation • Promotion of legumes for agro-ecosystem health Water harvesting technologies (Zai) in Sahel

Issues for future • Targeting research to meet the changing scenarios • globalisation • feminisation of agriculture • Differentiated strategies/technology options for a wider range of farmers • Develop strategic partnership including private sector(seed sector, processors) • Emphasis on NRM technologies that increases returns to labor [eg HATA] • New science (Biotechnology, ICT)
