  • Currently, 1 in 2 people within our community are diagnosed with cancer by age 85. With this in mind, Cancer Council’s position in the community is one of relevance and importance to all.
  • The survival rate for many common cancers has increased by more than 30 per cent in the past two decades. More than 60% of cancer patients will survive more than five years after diagnosis.

Relay for Life

An internationally recognised event

  • Relay For Life is an overnight team event to raise funds for cancer research, prevention and support programs. The event is hours of fun and everyone is welcome. A festive atmosphere is created with teams camping out overnight, free entertainment, games and spot prizes.
  • Teams of 10 or more participants are challenged to complete a relay style walk or run over 18 - 24 hours at selected venues throughout Australia. Each event begins with the inspirational Survivor’s Walk and at dusk there is a moving Candlelight Memorial Ceremony.
  • By keeping administrative costs to a minimum Cancer Council ensures the majority of the money raised goes directly towards research, prevention and support programs.

Relay for Life

Cancer Council largest fundraiser

  • Relay For Life began with one event in Melbourne in 1999, at which 34 teams raised $75,000. In 2005, over 100 Relay For Life events across Australia wide raised over $8 million, and in 2009 we raised almost $16 million.
  • The key to the success of Relay For Life is in the strength of the community. The unifying effort of raising money for a cause bonds the corporate community with employees, businesses with their consumers, school teachers with parents and students, and local government with the public. The event serves as a great equalizer and provides the rare opportunity to build real community spirit.
