  1. Buddhism

  2. Buddhism • Imported from India around the 1st cent. AD • How did it get to China? • Under what Dynasty?

  3. Buddhism • Based on the teachings of the Buddha (the Enlightened one)

  4. Began with the teachings of Siddhartha Guatama (the Buddha) • Siddhartha was a prince whose father tried to protect him from the suffering of the world • At 29 Siddhartha left the palace and saw suffering • An oldman • A diseased man • A rotting corpse • Anascetic (someonewholivedextremelysimply, deprivingthemselvesofallthings)

  5. Siddhartha was depressed and decided to try to escape old age, disease, and death by asceticism (living without things) He found that did not bring spiritual benefits and were counterproductive (1 grain of rice a day) He then sat under a fig tree (the Bodhi tree), meditated for 49 days, and experienced "enlightenment/awakending” He had discovered "the Middle Way" - a balance between asceticism and self-indulgence After this he was known as the Buddha and spent the rest of his life teaching his insight

  6. Buddhism • By 300 AD Buddhist beliefs were seen in Chinese religious practices, literature, scholarship and art. • In turn, Chinese practices influenced Chinese Buddhism.

  7. What is Buddhism? • There are 3 major types of Buddhism • Every Buddhist’s goal is to become “awakened” from the “sleep of ignorance” • Once “awakened” the Buddhist enters Nirvana—the end of suffering. • SWEET! But how does a Buddhist get to Nirvana?

  8. 4 Noble Truths • Life is Suffering • The origin of suffering is desire (attachment) • Stop desiring things and you will end suffering (don’t get attached to things) • The way out of suffering is the 8 Fold Path

  9. The Buddhist Guide to Enlightenment To become free from suffering, you must follow the 8-fold path: • Right Views • Right Intentions • Right Speech • Right Action • Right Occupation • Right Effort • Right Mindfulness • Right Meditation

  10. Reincarnation: Karma is Key!! How you act in this lifetime determines how you will be reincarnated (what you will come back as after you die) As a human? Animal? Ant? Or will you reach nirvana (where there is no suffering)

  11. Reincarnation: Karma is Key!! • Consider Buddhahood to be the highest attainment - results in freedom from…. • samsara (the cycle of birth, suffering, death, and rebirth)

  12. Words of Wisdom from Buddhas • Friends, the things you desire give no more satisfaction than drinking sea water, therefore practice contentment. • You will have to depart leaving everything behind, so do not be attached to anything. • Have no hatred for enemies, and no attachment for friends. • See all living beings as your father or mother, and love them as if you were their child. • If you talk too much with little meaning you will make mistakes, therefore speak in moderation, only when necessary. • Since this human life is wasted by indulging in distractions, now is the time to practice concentration

  13. Why do you think Buddhism became so popular in Asia? • What was it about the philosophy and message that would be appealing to so many? • Discuss
