Introduction • Born: March 16th,1775 in Port Conway, Virginia • Died: June 28th, 1836 in Virginia • Elected: March 4th, 1804 • Political Party: Democrat/Republican • Interesting Facts: * James Madison was the smallest U.S. President (He was 5’ 6”). *In 1752, Great Britain adopted a new calendar. This changed Madison’s birthday from March 4th to March 16th.

  3. Early Life: Family + Educationslide 1 • James was the oldest of 12 siblings • His dad was also named James Madison • His mom’s name was Eleanor “Nelly” Conway • His mom homeschooled him by teaching him to read and write • James fell in love with reading

Early Life: Family + Educationslide 2 • When James was 11 he went to Donald Robertson’s boarding school • At 16 James studied with a tutor named Thomas Martin… After 2 years of studying he was ready for college • Martin encouraged James to attend the College of New Jersey… Later he moved to New Jersey

  5. Family Life • James married a widow named Dolly Payne Todd • From Dolly’s first marriage she had a son named John Payne Todd

  6. The Election • James’ vice presidents was George Clinton • James ran against Charles C. Pinckney of South Carolina

  7. Life Accomplishments • James was elected to the Orange County Committee of Safety • He was reelected president in the War of 1812

  8. Interesting Facts • James Madison was the shortest president • In 1814, British soldiers set fire to the White House. Dolly saved a painting of George Washington • When Madison was president Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” • In 1752 Great Britain adopted a new calendar which changed his birthday
