  2. Priority areas for the work of TFMM (2010-2019) Integrated measurements and data assimilation Bridging global and regional scales: the links of air pollution and climate change Assessment of impacts on ecosystems Improving population exposure estimates

  3. Session 1:Integrated measurements and data assimilation Data assimilation techniques can be useful for EMEP specially with respect for inverse modelling, and for re-analysis applications. Requirements for DA techniques to be used in inverse modelling: variational techniques are recommended, because of their use of adjoint models. Recommendation to create a working group identifying the needs of EMEP about the use satellite data in DA for air pollution – interaction with GMES highly recommended

Session 2:Bridging global and regional scales: the links of air pollution and climate change TFMM and THTAP have both different and well justified objectives with the work of EMEP, still in the future they will share even to a larger degree tools, methods and data. Joint goals to 1) determine the influence of background pollution in Europe and 2) the effect of climate change on air pollution. Extensive use nested models in the future and the use of integrated measurements and data assimilation techniques. THTAP with focus on the extension of the EMEP work to other areas in the world, TFMM with focus on effect in the European area. Recommendation for 1): co-operate in the tracer experiments to determine vertical exchange between models and jointly compile data for validation Recommendation for 2): Target efforts to determine/quantify to what extent PM, O3 and BC affect global warming, as a first step for further analysis

Session 3:Assessment of impacts on ecosystems Big political and scientific issue which goes beyond the air pollution aspects Basic need for developing/enhancing close cooperation between the different groups of the Convention interested in this question ; also work from other instances must be known review of current studies , projects , data available joint meeting in 2009 Technical issues : dry (and wet) deposition modelling measurement data fitted to modelling needs (fluxes ; micro-meteorological parameters) input data : emissions (which are dependant to time and meteorology) vegetation characteristics , land cover…. Scenarios related to the potential changes in ecosystem that can affect atmospheric chemistry Earth system modelling (more effort on the G of WAGES)…. Too ambitious objective?

  6. Session 4:Improving population exposure estimates Presently health impacts are analyzed in terms of urban background outdoor conc. and weighted by population. Further need for variability analysis in urban areas, both spatially and temporally. The CityDelta approach needs to be revisited for PM, O3 and possibly other pollutants Re-evaluate the generalization approach Update of health epidemiological information Use of refined emission data in cities Improvement of population exposure estimates for policy control may in the future involve also analysis of inhalation and multimedia pathways – PCBs, PAHs health effect based policy?
