VOLKSWAGEN SA • Volkswagen South Africa also know as VWSA engaged in a supply chain project working with in partnership with SABCOHA, the DoH and ILO • The broad objective of the project was to put in place a National SafeWork action programme • The focus was to establish a preventative health and safety culture which included an effective response to HIV/AIDS in the workplace

  3. KEY OBJECTIVES • To build organisational capacity to manage HIV/AIDS • To implement effective and sustainable HIV/AIDS workplace programmes in the supplier companies • To use SABCOHA toolkit in the implementation of workplace programmes

VWSA’s INVOLVEMENT • VWSA provided expertise, material and other support for the companies in its supply chain to establish their own programmes • By working with 7 companies with between 25 and 1 000 employees in the Eastern Cape region they reached about 2400 employees in total • They provided companies with training of co-ordinators, peer educators, information sessions for management and ongoing support and advice in policy development and implementation of programme structures

COSTS OF ENGAGING THE SUPPLY CHAIN TO VW • By working with partners • SABCOHA, funded the project management costs • ILO, funded the training component • DoH, provided testing kits • VWSA’s contribution was providing the staff to conduct testing for the VCT process and other VCT-related resources. There was no monetary costs involved

SUCCESSES Because of strong collaborative partnerships, efficient service provider delivery, good relationship with top managers and co-ordinators from the supply chain companies and tailoring the implementation of the programme to suit individual company needs, VWSA was able to: • Reach a total of 7 companies in its supply chain • Achieve good uptake of VCT (60-99%) in the 7 companies • Train co-ordinators, peer educators and senior management

  7. UNILEVER • Leveraged the power of collaboration to bring its workplace programme to more than 500,000 tea growers in Kenya • Worked with company’s own supply chain and local tea growers

UNILEVER’s INVOLVEMENT • Through collaboration with the Kenya Tea Growers Association and dozens of small-scale farmers that supply them directly Unilever was able to: • Bring its comprehensive model to the surrounding communities. This included: • VCT • Public education and engagement • Prevention of mother-to- child transmission, and • Provision of ARV’s to surrounding communities

  9. KEY SUCCESSES • Expanded from the workplace and managed to equip 92 community members with tools and knowledge to train other community members to become peer educators • In total 510 voluntary peer educators were trained on HIV prevention, where to get tested and how to get treatment-information. • ARV treatment is provided through a partnership with PEPFAR
