  1. The Five Different “Firsts” in the Traffic History

  2. Each and every state and nation has their own set of traffic rules and regulations. The rules and regulations in one country may not work on the other and vice versa. To tell you frankly, the traffic rules and regulations plays an important role in the traffic system. A rule can make or break the traffic system. It can lessen the congestion and it can worsen the situation. Aside from the basic traffic rules and regulations, what do you know about the history of traffic? To give a brief overview, here are the five different “firsts” in the history of traffic.

  3. First Traffic Sign System- traffic signs originated from roadside rocks and erected stone columns. However, as time goes by, the elements of nature are not enough to guide the motorists. As a result, the first traffic sign system was created in the year 1895 through the efforts of the Italian Touring Club. In the year 1909, nine countries and Europe decided to use the same signs that indicate road attributes such as intersection, bump, and curve. The modern day traffic sign system began in the year 1950.

  4. First Traffic Light- the British introduced the use and purpose of the first traffic lights. The traffic lights provide two- color sign which are red and green. These traffic lights are powered through the use of gas. After a few months, the traffic lights exploded and the British parliament decided not to recreate it. On the other hand, the idea of the traffic lights lightens up other inventors.

  5. First Driver License- in the year 1904, the Motor Car Act was adopted. Since then, the drivers are being required to apply for a driver’s license from the duly authorized committee. Aside from that, the term reckless driving was introduced together with the penalties that may be incurred. Nowadays, reckless drivers are fined with a traffic ticket and they have to attend classes in a traffic school.

  6. First License Plates- due to the increase in the number of vehicles in the road, the authorities decided that it can be harder to track the owners of each car. In the year 1893, France issued vehicles’ plate numbers. The numbers and the car owners are listed for easier tracking. Afterwards, other countries followed the lead and used plates to track the vehicle’s owners.

  7. First Traffic Legislation- the British Parliament adopted the Locomotive on Highways Act in the year 1861. The act was approved to avoid the noise caused by vehicles’ travelling during the night.
