Lesson EighteenOverview of the Musculoskeletal System • Objectives • Explore how skeletal muscles and bones interact to produce movement • Investigate and identify tissues of the musculoskeletal system • Reproduce the movements made in a chicken wing • Bellwork • What happens to the shape of a muscle when it causes something to move back and forth?

  2. Day one Discuss safety tips(may write in notebooks) Sanitary issues Latex allergies? Proper handling Scalpel/scissors issues Goggles Disposal of materials Disinfecting and cleanup Getting Started Read p 150 and complete “Getting Started” p 151 2. Stand on your tiptoes and focus on everything your bones and muscles are doing. Answer the questions A-C. 4. List all you know about bones and muscles. (names, roles, locations, etc) Bones Muscles • Discuss bellwork • Complete getting started activity and discuss • Discuss list of things to identify on the wing • You have a checklist on p 217 of TM, they have a list on p 153 of SG

  3. Day Two • Inquiry 18.1 p. 153 (Soak wings in 10% bleach to be less stinky. Demonstrate how to remove the skin. Skin will be slippery because of fat) • 1. Answer the 2 questions under letter B about fat. • 2. Use your student sheet to identify the structures listed in step C. (observe and record on checklist) • 3. Produce a flapping motion with the wing. Answer the 2 questions under step D. • Tear apart the upper and lower wing parts. Answer the 2 questions under step E. • Look at the cross section of a bone. Describe what you see. (get large bone from butcher or hunter)

Read Spies reading and describe the 3 functions of bone Other homework ideas • Extensions p 215 TM • Research animals with backbones that are similar to humans. • 4. Answer the math questions about the relationship between height and bone length.
