  3. Introduction • 11th grade students • Technical Reading and Writing • Honors Algebra 2/Trigonometry • Tasked with designing a portion of the indoor space in Phase 3 • About 5,645ft2 area • Plan: to utilize space to best address the lack of workspaces for student projects

Problem • Issue:lack of adequate workspaces -small quantity of available spaces and high noise level • Based on a survey distributed to DRSS staff and students in March, 2018: • ⅔ of the DRSS population requires a workspace for their projects at least once a month • Our school has over 600 students • 2 official breakout rooms, and 2 conference rooms • Over 85% of the student body uses quiet spaces to record audio and visual material for a project various times throughout the year • almost ⅓ requires these types of spaces at least once a month.

Solution CONCEPT CRITIQUE CREATE Brainstorm space Breakout rooms Makerspace with Recording Studio • The Solution: We propose to create a space where students can have adequate supplies and environment to complete the project process. • Makes projects more time efficient, and teachers will not have to reserve spaces for their students.

Reasoning • Students frequently require a project workspace • 75% of the DRSS population prefers for the space to be multipurpose. • A study published in 2013 shows that giving more choice to employees about their workplace increases productivity by 7% • Top 5 topics used: • Breakout rooms • Soundproof recording studios • Clean makerspace

  9. Methods The space will be renovated: walls, floors, electrical, plumbing re-done A 2019 STEMmersion can be set up to decorate the space and design wall murals. Furnishings and equipment will be obtained. Students can volunteer to help set up. Mr. Slone can set up software. April 2018 July 2018 May 2019 June 2018 September 2018 Construct recording studios, set up green screens and lighting, set up breakout rooms. Space will be completed and ready for use.

Analysis of Alternatives Alternative #1: Library • Use our computers more than textbooks • Books can be checked out from English teachers’ libraries • Access to Wright State’s library through CCP classes Alternative #2: Art Studio • Two large art spaces at our school: • Ms. Montgomery’s room • Robotics space • There is no dedicated project work space Our Plan: • Of the top 5 votes (student lounge, breakout space and makerspace) were utilized in our design because it was more relevant to the needs of our school

Goals Goals: • Create more adequate project workspaces • Have an indoor space that can be used effectively for all grade levels Objectives: • At least 300 different students will use the space during the school year • Teachers will not have to reserve breakout rooms for their students • Provide students with adequate technology for their projects • Provide students access to a workspace with adequate sound levels

Evaluation • Is the space used often by students and teachers? • Does the project workspace promote and increase the quality and efficiency of projects at DRSS? • Will the project work space exemplify our school culture of project based learning? • Will the project workspace benefit the school 5 years from now? 10 years? Data collection: • Students put their student ID in order to enter the space • Tracks data for question 1 • Provides security for the amount of equipment in the space

  13. Budget • Total Cost: $51,858.39 - $63,931.39 • Paint- $660 • Drywall- 4,026 • Windows- $8,532 - $20,605 • Doors- $5,100 • Furniture- $34,200.39 • Tables- $5,102.88 • Couches and chairs- $26,519.70 • Recording Studio- $2,577.81

  14. Budget Building already includes: • Outer walls • Flooring • Electrical • Plumbing Not accounted for: • Labor • Electronics if the school already owns some • Small furniture items • Shelving and storage • Would be added as storage is needed

Future Funding STEMersion project: • $2,000 of the STEMmersion budget would go to a STEMersion centered around remodeling the indoor space • Including painting, creating furniture, designing décor (mobiles), etc. Grants: • Lowe’s Small Toolbox for Education $5,000- gift certificate • Community Impact Grant (Home Depot) $5,000- gift certificate • American Hondo Foundation Education Grants- $20,000-$75,000 • Supports innovative STEM based projects

Conclusion • Idea: creative space designed specifically for project work • 3 C’s concept • Multipurpose • Productive yet comfortable atmosphere • Goal: majority of the STEM population in the space at least once per year • 300 student quota • Use student ID codes to track who enters • Need:$51,858.39 - $63,931.39to complete our design plans • Will be funded through grants, donations, volunteer work
