  1. Theory Critique Breaking down Educational Theories

  2. Who does the theory apply to and is it universal?

  3. Vygotsky • Research based on white population • Assumes that all learners learn the same way regardless of sex, race, socioeconomic status Kruse • Research applies to a diverse population (because “human beings, in a physiological sense, are not very different”)

  4. What are the practical applications of the theory?

  5. What are the practical applications of the theory? Vygotsky’s Theory • Must assess the zone of proximal development • Must provide the challenge • Must provide sufficient support http://webpages.charter.net/schmolze1/vygotsky/vyg15.jpg

  6. What are the practical applications of the theory? Kruse’s Theory • Kruse believes you need to assess the schemas of individual to help them incorporate new ideas • Each student has unique experiences that build their background and beliefs http://media.linkedin.com/mpr/mpr/shrink_80_80/p/1/000/00d/3a1/1ba9cab.jpg

  7. How does the theory address the issue of Social Justice?

  8. Vygotsky • Since the Socio-cultural theory is heavily influenced by society (including community, family, culture, peers) it logically follows that social justice improvements would lead to improved learning

  9. Kruse • Direct correlation between experiences and learning, thus expanding experiences will expand learning • In an attempt to level the playing field, it is crucial to take into account prior experiences • “Each students' background and experiences has value, the challenge for a teacher is connecting those prior experiences with the content they are trying to teach”
