  1. SHETLAND PONIES By: Sandi Straub

  2. Shetlands are rugged little ponies.

  3. They can be between 7-10.2 hands high • They normally way about 450 lbs. • They have a long life-span, normally up to 30 years • For their size, they are stronger than other breeds of horses • They originate from the Shetland Islands

  4. The Shetland Islands • Located north of Scotland just west of Norway • The terrain is rugged and the climate cold

  5. They have warm, fuzzy coats to endure the harsh climate.

  6. Shetland ponies come in a variety of colors including black, chestnut, bay, paint, gray, brown, palomino, dun, and roan. There are also some others, too.

  7. Today they are primarily used for pony rides and driving carts. In the 1800's, they were used in the coal mining industry, to haul coal cars in the pits.

  8. But no matter what their job, they are adorable, loving friends.
