  2. Summer Institute Hepburn Mentor: Dr. Stanton Miller The Summer Institute brings together college students interested in public health to engage in discussion, research and effective implementation of health programs in accordance with the hospital’s mission of serving the community

  3. My Project: Prepare for Surgery class Background The Prepare for Surgery Program is a holistic pre-surgical program currently based on a Peggy Huddleston model. In the two hour class, patients learn: To prepare their mind and body for surgery To prepare their homes for recovery To decrease anxiety and increase comfort in order to speed recovery. The class covers many relaxation techniques and gives patients a comprehensive overview of their stay in the hospital.

  4. Goals/Objectives As part of the process of the change from a Peggy Huddleston Program to a Lourdes branded program: Prepare research-based surgery specific patient education handout for pre and post care. Map out process of patient throughout hospital for each procedure Assist in development of CDs and brochures Research how to create study to evaluate effectiveness

  5. Responsibilities Project Mentor: Nurse Coleen Naylor Created surgery-specific educational handouts for patients coming in to class. Created database for updating surgery statistics for the program’s evaluation. Researched on different studies conducted on holistic health practices and their effectiveness. Researched articles as teaching material for class.

  7. Weekly Journal Meeting Discussed handpicked articles on different issues pertaining to health care : Cultural competency in a health setting The Role of Insurance Companies Targeted Marketing to specific populations Health disparities in the United States Syringe Exchange programs

  9. Challenges Setting achievable goals within the time framework Accessing surgery information from doctor’s offices and presenting information using Health Literacy standards.
