  1. Greenhouse Maintenance Horticulture II

  2. Maintenance Items • There are four “categories” of greenhouse maintenance. • Temperature • Light • Moisture • Sanitation

  3. Temperature Maintenance • Temperature maintenance involves inspecting, repairing, and maintaining the heating and cooling components of the greenhouse. • Heaters • Fans • Cooling Pads • Shade Cloths

  4. Heater Maintenance • Ensuring that all heaters are working properly is important to maintaining correct temperature levels inside the greenhouse. • Basic maintenance of heaters involves: • Having adequate, clean fuel • Ensuring that thermostats are working properly

  5. Fan Maintenance • Fans move air into, out of, and around the greenhouse. • Basic maintenance of fans involves: • Fan motors inspected and working properly • Belts in good condition • Louvers working properly • Includes opening and closing

  6. Cooling Pad Maintenance • Cooling pads cool the air that is forced through them by passing the air over water. • Basic cooling pad maintenance involves: • Having an adequate supply of clean water • Pads being cleaned regularly • Any pumps and tubing being inspected for repair needs.

  7. Shade Cloth Maintenance • Shade cloths help regulate greenhouse temperature by diffusing the sunlight before it enters the greenhouse. • Shade cloths also regulate light intensity in the greenhouse. • Shade cloth maintenance involves: • Being attached properly • Being applied or removed as needed

  8. Maintenance of Light Sources • In addition to the shade cloth it is also important to ensure that: • all light bulbs are working and replaced as needed • Photocells and timers are working properly

  9. Moisture Controls • Moisture controls such as humidistats and fogging or mist systems should be working properly. • Be sure that water lines and faucets are not leaking. • Be sure that you have an adequate supply of clean, high quality water.

  10. Greenhouse Sanitation • This is possibly the most overlooked (certainly in our greenhouse) greenhouse maintenance item. • What do you think of when you hear the word “sanitation”?

  11. Sanitation • Greenhouse sanitation involves cleaning in and outside of the greenhouse. • Weeds should be controlled around the greenhouse. • Inside the greenhouse you should prevent weeds, insects, rodents, and diseases.

  12. Structural Repairs • A greenhouse is like any other building in that it requires structural repairs. • Check for and repair any: • Loose, torn or cut plastic covers • Broken glass or fiberglass • Door locks and fasteners • Air leaks • Damaged framework or foundation

  13. Utility Repairs • Utility repairs involve: • Water • Electricity • Gas or Fuel Oil • Waste and Trash Disposal

  14. Project • As mentioned our greenhouse is not exactly the perfect model of greenhouse sanitation. • There are many things that need to be improved and cleaned in the greenhouse.

  15. Your Task • Go out to the greenhouse and make a list of things that need to be repaired, replaced, improved, or cleaned. • You should be able to list items in each of the four categories. • Be specific in the items that you list. • Don’t just say “weeds”, say “clean weeds out of all plant material.” • You should be able to come up with at least ten greenhouse maintenance items.
