  1. Greenhouse Effects

  2. What is "Greenhouse Effect"?

  3. Types of greenhouse gases: • Carbon dioxide (CO2) • Methane (CH4) • Water vapour (H2O) • Nitrous oxide (N2O) • Ozone (O3) • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)

  4. Carbon Dioxide • As a greenhouse gas because of its ability to absorb • infrared light • Colorless with a pungent, odorless gas • Acid taste • Slightly toxic • Density of carbon dioxide is around 1.98kg/m3, • about 1.5 times as heavy as air • Solid&liquid used for cooling and, • refrigeration in the transport of foods • Gas is used to carbonate soft drinks,Etc.

  5. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) • Stable, non-reactive with other chemical compounds • non-toxic • Non-flammable • Easy to manufacture • Wide range of usage • e.g. refrigeration industry (製冷工業)

  6. CFCs

  7. With more greenhouse gases released to the atmosphere due to human activity, more infrared radiation will be trapped in the Earth's surface which contributes to the “Enhanced Greenhouse Effect”. Current analysis suggests that the combustion of fossil fuels is a major contributer to the increase in the carbon dioxide concentration. Increasing in Greenhouse Gases

  8. Global Warming • Refers to the increase in the average • temperature of the Earth's near-surface • air and oceans. • An issue of major concern is the possible • effect of the burning of fossil fuels and • other contributers to the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

  9. Effects of global warming • Cause sea level rise. • Is expected to increase the intensity of extreme • weather events. • Storms and floods will cause economic loss. • Climate patterns will change, some regions will have more frequent storms and flooding. • Increase the ranges of disease vectors. • May cause species extinctions. • The polar icecaps will melt,so sea levels will rise,low-lying areas of the world will flood.

  10. I am melting now! Help me!

  11. Reduce greenhouse gases • Save Electricity • Reduce gasoline consumption • Tree planting • Use less paper • Recycle • Replace fossil fuels with renewable energy resources • Buy less
