Central Concepts – “The Core” • Beliefs – fixed core beliefs in terms of what we provide the Army and the Cadet. • “Face of America,” located in every state and representing a broad spectrum of educational institutions • Enables a traditional American college experience concurrent with training to lead in The Army and society • The workhorse for Army officer commissions • Quality – best we can possibly recruit,develop, and commission • Quantity – carry the Army load -- all components • Principal source of officer diversity • Geographic • Ethnic • Educational • Graduates are poised to be successful in life, in and out of uniform • Functions • Recruit • Develop • Retain • Commission • Values – Army Values and Warrior Ethos

Priorities • Develop Warrior Leaders – inculcated with the Soldier’s Creed • Recruit and retain quality cadets (SALs) • Select, develop, and maintain competent, confident, committed cadre • Increase diversity and targeted mission success • Partner with the Reserve Components • Improve internal command and control • Execute equipment modernization plan • Sustain JROTC operations

  8. Soldier’s Creed I am an American Soldier. I am a Warrior and a member of a team. I serve the people of the United States and live the Army Values. I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade. I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills. I always maintain my arms, my equipment and myself. I am an expert and I am a professional. I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy the enemies of the United States of America in close combat. I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life. I am an American Soldier. WARRIOR ETHOS

Command Philosophy • Five key areas: People, Leader Attributes, Leadership, Cadet Qualities, and Training. • People • We are in the people business. • Remember the Golden Rule…be fair. • Become involved in your university and community. • Define success and reward it. • Leader Attributes • Leaders possess diverse qualities and attributes: analytical, adaptive, decisive, patient, communicate in all directions and act in the absence of orders. • Leaders are team players who generate trust, underwrite honest mistakes, unafraid of decentralized decision-making and develop subordinate leaders. • Successful leaders do what is right. • You are a role model. • Leadership • Establish a good command climate. • Lead from the front and set the example. • I encourage initiative and risk-taking behavior. • Never give up – give cadets freedom to try and try again.

Command Philosophy (Cont) • Cadet Qualities • Incoming Fall 03 freshman are the future leaders of the first unit equipped (FUE) Future Force’s Unit of Action. • Must be capable of greater initiative and creativity than leaders of today. • Future leaders must exemplify the Warrior Ethos. • Must be quality individuals that possess Army Values. • Training • Everything we do must be training – make challenging, interesting, and exciting.
