  11. Sign Out At the far right is a link called Sign Out. Click on Sign Out to close your Gmail account. You should sign out every time you finish if you want to keep your Gmail private. Always sign out if you are on a public or shared computer.

  13. Left Gmail Menu The menu on the left side helps you use Gmail. We will only talk about the most important menu choices. Contacts is your address book. The Compose Mail button lets you write an email to someone. Sent has copies of all the email you have sent to people already. Drafts has copies of messages you have written (or started) but have not sent yet.

  14. Making the Menu Easier to Use • You can take away some of the menu items if you do not use them. • Look at the bottom of the main page: • You can turn off Chat and Buzz. That will make them disappear from the menu. (You can put them back later, if you want them.)

  15. Turn off Chat • Click on turn off chat • Chat will disappear from the left menu. • The bottom has changed, too.

  16. Page without Chat Chat is not in the left menu any more. The bottom choice has changed to turn on chat.

  17. Turn off Buzz • Click on turn off buzz • This time, a new page opens. • The bottom has changed, too.

  18. Disable Buzz Click on the bottom red link. Don’t worry, you can get Buzz back later if you want it.

  19. Are you sure? Click on the Yes, delete my profile and posts. This won’t matter if you have never used Buzz.

  20. A Simpler Left Menu Now you have a simpler menu to work with. As you learn more, you can make the page fancier and add options. For now, we will just work on sending and receiving email.
