  1. An Accessible On Ramp To The Information Highway

  2. Lesson 3E Receiving Email

  3. You’ve Got Mail When someone sends you an email message, it goes into your Inbox.

  4. Inbox Information The Inbox has information about the message before you even open it. The information in the very top bar is an ad. You can ignore it.

  5. Inbox Action Buttons • The top row of buttons are things you can do with your messages. We won’t deal with most of them in this tutorial. • We will talk about a few of them in a little while.

  6. Inbox Messages • The most important information is the writing in the middle

  7. The Sender • Each line is information about a different email. • The name of the person or group who sent you the email is at the left end of the line. • The “name” of the Sender is the part of their email address before the @ sign.

  8. Subject • The subject of the email is in the middle of the line. • The subject is what the person typed into the subject box when they composed the email.

  9. Date Received • The date at the right end of each line is the date when the email arrived in your inbox.

  10. How to Open an Email Mail Click on the line for the email message you want to read.

  11. Reading an Email Subject Sender Date Received Email Message

  12. Ads • Don’t worry about the links on the right side of the email message. • They are ads. • Ads help pay for Gmail so it is free for you.

  13. After You Read an Email You can do many different things: • Go back to the Inbox • Go right to the next message • Write an answer • Send a copy to someone else • Print the email • Delete the email

  14. To Go Back to the Inbox • Click on Back to Inbox. • Then you can open another email or do something else.

  15. To Go to the Next Email • Click on Older to see the next email in the list (going down the list). • Click on Newer to see the next email in the list (going up the list).

  16. To Write Back to the Sender To write back to the person who sent the email, click the Reply link.

  17. Reply Box • A new message box will open under the message you just read. • Type you message in the top of the new box. • A copy of the other person’s message will be underneath.

  18. Writing Your Reply • Write your reply the same way you learned to write a new message. • You can use Send, Save Now, and Discard the same way, too

  19. Sending the Email to Someone Else • If a message is not private, you might want to send it on to another person. • (You would probably not send on the party invitation we just looked at.) • Sending on a message you received to a new person is called Forwarding.

  20. A Message to Forward • This is the kind of message you might want to forward to other people. • It might interest them and it is not private. • Click on Forward.

  21. Adding a Note to Your Forward • When you click on forward, you get a box like the one you get for reply. • You can just send the message, or you can add a note. • Type your note at the top of the box.

  22. Sending to Two or More People • You can send a message, a reply, or a forward to more than one person at a time. • Just put all the addresses in the To box, with commas between them.

  23. Getting a Bigger Message Box • You can look at the message box when you compose a new message, a reply, or a forward in a separate, bigger window. • Just click on the button above the top right corner of the message box.

  24. Printing a Message (1) • There are two ways to print a message. • If you used the button to see the message better, just click on Print All.

  25. Printing a Message (2) • No matter what window you are in, you can click on the Down Arrow next to Reply. • Click on Print in the drop down menu. • This gets you to other choices, too.

  26. Deleting • You can leave messages in the Inbox as long as you want to – there is plenty of room. • But if you want to delete messages, you can do that, too. • You can delete messages one at a time or in groups.

  27. Deleting Messages One at a Time • Click on the little box next to the message you want to get rid of. • Then click one of the Deletebuttons. • The message will go away. It will be in the Trash.

  28. Deleting a Group of Messages • Just click on the little boxes next to all the messages you want to delete. • Then click Delete.

  29. Deleting from the Message Screen • If you are reading a message and decide to delete it, just click the Delete button.

  30. Are You Sure? • After you click Delete, you will see this: • If you change your mind, click Undo.

  31. Trash • Deleted messages go into the Trash. • You can find the Trash on the left menu by clicking More. • You can get your messages back unless you delete the messages in the Trash folder. You don’t need to ever do this.

  32. More About Gmail • We will talk about email safety, spam, and other issues in Section 4: Safety. • Gmail can do more things that what we have told you. To learn more, • There are many tutorials on-line for Gmail, • Or you can try Gmail Help, • Or you can look at the supplemental materials on the On-Ramp website.
