  1. In The Ultimate Safari: What are the villagers running away from? What is Kruger Park? What is its significance?  Who are the Bandits? What did they do? • In The White Bone: What are the elephants running away from? Do humans or animals take precedence in survival? Should it be balanced?

  2. Do we sympathize with the deaths of people or with the deaths of animals? Why do you think this is?

  3. Who are the “white people” at the end of short story? What do they do? • Why doesn’t the grandmother want to go back to Mozambique?

  4. How do these two author’s viewpoints differ? • Whose argument is stronger: Gordimer’s or Gowdy’s?  Why?

  5. How does the White Bone work? • As humans, do we have a “white bone “ of some sort? For example, during times of disaster, how do we find refuge or know what places are safe? • Do humans seek refuge from anything? Are we running from anything? (More specifically in the short story)

  6. Should the elephants search for the “white bone” when no signs of trouble exist? (p 75) • In the short story do humans search for something? • What are the troubles the villagers are facing?

  8. Since humans have hunted elephants for a very long time and elephants have an excellent memory of this, would it ever be possible for humans and elephants to live as one together? (Despite all of the negativity humans are associated with)...Will elephants (or any species) be able to trust humans again?
