  2. Where did it come from? • Jazz first developed in New Orleans, Louisiana • The 1894 Racial Segregation Law forced Creoles to live on other side of Canal street, with African-American Neighbors.

  3. How was it created? • Jazz was a mixture of the European harmony of the Creoles, and the African-American Blues, Gospel, and work-songs. • Jazz is an African and European music hybrid.

  4. Who claims to have founded Jazz? • Jelly-roll Morton claims to have created jazz music. • In 1902, he applied a swing syncopation to all sorts of music (ragtime, opera, songs) and introduced the ‘two-bar break’ for solo improvisation.

  5. Jazz Today • Jazz has become once of the most popular music styles. • Jazz is always changing with new influences from around the world. • Improvised solos remains highly characteristic of jazz music.
