IBT IBT or Internet Based Testing is a form of competence, skill or knowledge assessment through computer or internet. Another form of IBT is Web Based Testing (WBT). WBT has the similar characteristics with Computer Based Testing (CBT).
IBT example using drupal 6 Drupal is a PHP-based Content Management System (CMS). CMS can also be downloaded and freely developed as it is open source. Drupal has a potential development in various fields. Therefore, practitioners prefer to call drupal as a generalist website. Here is the drupal usability in general : • Community portal site • News publishing • Aficionado sites • Intranet / corporate web sites • Resource directories • International sites • Education • Art, music, multimedia • Social networking sites, etc
Drupal can be developed for education with various features. Actually drupal is not intended for LMS (learning management system) such as blackboard or moodle . However , drupal promises easy and various usage of blended learning in which it integrates between face to face learning and online activities. Generally, Drupal based IBT offers functionality in which it has various quiz types, multimedia compatibility, good administration and management practicality. The outline of IBT application is stated as follows. • Administrator provided IBT, students’ username and password, and polls. • Students visited “haroyomedia.000space.com” • Student logged in to the website using username and password given. • Students did the quiz. • Students filled out-line polls after they have finished doing the quiz. • Students updated students account and change students password for security reason • Administrator managed IBT result and polls.
Concerns Advantage There are some advantages can be inferred from the prototype of Drupal based IBT application. • Various quiz types • Scoring flexibility • Multimedia compatibility • Systematic data base and administration • Ease, and secure usage • Stable, secure, and robust performance.
Obtacles • Development There were some obtacles to consider in developing Drupal : • Internet connection • Human resource • Time allocation • hosting • Apllication • Notebook availability • Internet connection • Power outlet • Students honesty

The questions are: • Do you have a notebook pr netbook? • Are you familiar with IBT? • Have you taken any IBT? • What adventage you get from IBT? • Does IBT help you gain better technology literacy? • Do you prefer Internet Based Testing (IBT) or Paper Based Test (PBT)? • What difficulty did you find in taking IBT? • Do you think that students are honest in taking IBT? • What orther features need to be attached to the website?
CBT CBT or Computer Based Testing is form of assessment or test which is carried out through electronic devices (electronic exam). Electronic exam is form of exam which is carried out using computer (PC) or other electronic devices in which response is recorded and assessed.
Learning Technology Dissemination Initiative (LTDI, 1999) suggests that the use of information and communications Technology (ICT) in language testing has a number of positive characteristic, such as: • More frequent use of formative and summative test or assessment; • Test/assessment result is more quickly distributed to teachers so they can prepare appropriate learning materials sooner; • It provides opportunities for students to test personally (self-assessment) by the time they are ready. • It is able to increase students’ self esteem; • It is more preferred by students because the result is known faster.
the positive side of CBT use is also supported by seem of empirical studies conducted by a number of experts. Implementation of Computer Based Testing (IBT) is an innovative method in conducting assessments which is cheaper, faster and wider than conventional methods. In addition, CBT facilitates students who have limited or specific conditions better. The positive impact and benefits of the use of CBT such as the increase of students’ achivment; the higher flexibility in learning; independent test result; as well as more preferred bt test takers.
The Differences IBT and CBT The iBT test can be considered the upgraded or newer version of the CBT. The iBT was introduced in the year 2005. Since the introduction of the iBT, the CBT tests have been completely replaced with it and were discontinued in the year 2006.
SUMMARY Computer Besed Testing (CBT) or Internet Based Testing is used wider and wider as a means of assessment. The benefits of IBT and CBT are: flexibility, speed, wide, range, and ability to accommodate students with special needs. Meanwhile, a number of abtracles in the implementation of CBT or IBT come from knowledge and mastery about computer, hardwere and software, test participants behavior or attitude, and the questions format the really assesses students’ academic ability.
