  2. THE FRAMEWORK FP7 project that involves 11 partners of which 7 are Science Centre. AIM to raise awareness of the role and representation of women in the field of science and technology.

  3. MAIN ACTIVITIES INSIDE THE PROJECT • An exhibition module • Gender day • 3 days events • Teacher training disseminated throughout science centres and museums in Europe Analysis about gender issues in science centres/museums

  4. THE EXHIBITION MODULE • PERMANENT: still in science centers after the end of the project • FLEXIBLE: suitable for any science Centre venue • LIGHT: few text

  5. How can we raise awareness for the role and representation of women in science and technology? How can young people overcome stereotypes in social roles of men and women, and gender biases in pursuit of careers in science? How can we help girls become the scientists of tomorrow? What do girls need to choose their future career?

  6. THE CONCEPT: A BIG SUITCASE as, a symbol of the path that young people, have to engage during their education and career.

  11. INTERPRETATIVE TOOLS A Virtual Puppet Challenge catch visitors’ attention and stimulate dialogue to debate on gender stereotypes Role not only communicative but relational, its aim is to create a relationship with the visitor

  12. INTERPRETATIVE TOOLS The Twisty identification mark Twisty communicate through a monitor connected to its generator computer, animated by an explainer through a data glove. The virtuality help : - to be a filter - to act as a friendly facilitator - to stimulate a more intimate dialogue with visitors. Because visitors feels free from social barriers and can get to get more easily involve.

  13. 10 STEREOTYPES BY TWISTY • “Women lack credibility as scientists” • “Girls are less interested than boys in science and technology”  • “Women are not suited to science and technology because they are not rational enough”  • ‘Women may be good at studying but they have less scientific talent than men”  • “Beauty and beauty care are incompatible with talent and passion for science and technology” • “Human relationships mean a lot to women, while science is impersonal”  • “Women do not like research as a career because it is too competitive”  • To succeed in science you should forego the family”  • “Science is removed from everyday life” “Research involves considerable isolation from society”  • “Science and technology threaten the environment”

APPROACHESUSED BY TWISTY TO FACE STEREOTYPE Informative, quote or provide data, statistics, research results, photographs, websites, or stories that contradict stereotypes); Puzzling, dismantling the falsity of a stereotype in a surprising way, arousing astonishment or an emotional reaction, for example through the biography quiz or some other “tricky quiz” Provocativesupporting the stereotype in a way that is so patently false as to create a reaction from the interlocutor, such as telling a girl “you know only boys can become scientists, don’t you?”, or “you’re too cute to be a scientist”; Empowermentboosting self-esteem by taking into account the opinions, doubts and curiosities of the interlocutor, for example by telling them that they show a scientific talent and that their questions are the same as those great scientists asked themselves in the beginning Recruitment, a specific application of the empowerment approach, which involves showing interest in the interlocutor as a potential valuable resource for science and discussing possible areas they would do well in on the basis of a quick analysis of their capabilities, inclinations and experiences, including the most simple – such as, for instance, having a pet and looking after it.

  17. EUROPEAN MULTIMEDIA DATABASE A collaborative work 7 European Countries, each partner selected and filmed 6 scientists An homogenous product a very detailed handbook with content and technical information: how to select the scientist, how to interview them, how to film, the 8 thematic areas

SELECTION CRITERIA Subject Areas STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics Expertise and Commitment Women work in innovative research areas, with an authoritative standing in the scientific community. Women aware of the issues, able to express it through their experiences Types of Scientists Multiform representation of women scientists in terms of age and career positions, responsibilities territorial representation

  23. The exhibition translated in seven language was organised in 2 crates and delivered in the seven Science Centre Experimentarium, DK Teknikens Hus, SW Trinity College, IRL House of Experiment, SL Bloomfield Science Museum, IS NEMO, NL CittadellaScienza, IT

  24. EXPERIMENTARIUM/29.09.11 “We have chosen a quieter area inside exhibition area where visitors can have on open access – and also an area that is quite light and has a positive atmosphere about it”
