Beechworth’s commercial centre extends along Camp Street Fort Street. • The Historic and Cultural Precinct, Located in Fort Street, is a major attraction, comprising of the town’s old court house. • La Trobe University's Beechworth campus occupies the site of the site of the farmer Mayday Hills hospital.

During this time the area was known as Mayday Hills (named by Lieutenant-Governor GJ La Trobe in May 1852). • Over four million ounces of gold were found between the years 1852 to 1866, which is worth several billion dollars in today's currency. • By 1853 a township began to form and the name Beechworth was bestowed by George D. • The Post office was bulit in 1869,the farmer of Bank of Victoria
