Pilgrims: • Pilgrims came to America for religious freedom • Church of England • Many people had different beliefs and did not want to be a part of this church, so they called themselves Separatists. • Separatists called themselves Pilgrims • A pilgrim is a person that makes a journey due to religious reasons.
Pilgrims Journey: • One Hundred men, women, and children boarded the Mayflower and set sail to America. • The Mayflower landed in present day Massachusetts. • The pilgrims started their own government, and wrote their rules, and called it the Mayflower compact.
Plymouth: • The pilgrims started Plymouth at the tip of Cape Cod. • These settlers had a hard time planting crops and surviving. • That spring, an American Indian Squanto visited the pilgrims. He taught the pilgrims how to plant crops such as corn, pumpkins and beans. • By the fall, the settlers had plenty of food. They had a feast to thank God for all their provisions. Today, this feast is celebrated as Thanksgiving.
Puritans: • They wanted to create a church that was free from fault and pure. • Settled north of Plymouth, and named their colony, the Massachusetts Bay Colony. • They brought people with all different skills to offer. • Successfully planted crops to harvest. • By the 1640’s 20, 000 Puritans followers came to this colony. • This region soon became known as New England.
