General Information • Admission requirements • B.Sc. (IT) or B.Com. (IT) degree with IT as a major • 60% average for the four 3rd year IT-modules • Duration of studies • 8 modules plus project module = Honours Degree • Choice of 1 or 2 years • One year: • 4 modules 1st semester • 4 modules 2nd semester • Project module = year module • Two years • Spread above over 2 years • Project must be completed in 1 year
General Information • Applying for Honours • DV3 form • Conditional acceptance, depending on final results (60% average across all 4 IT modules on final year level) • To be signed by Dr De Wet. • Official deadline: End of November 2012. • Registration in 2013 – study code 4532 • Bring completed registration form plus final study record to Dr De Wet to be approved / register online as soon as possible after information session.

Module Information • A maximum of 2 approved Honours modules may be taken from other departments. • It is, however, the student’s own responsibility to make sure that these modules fit into our timetable. • No changes to the timetable will be made from our side to accommodate other departments’ modules.
RIS693: Project Module • RIS693 Honours Project Guidelines 2013 • Read careful and sign last page • Compulsory • Year module - Must be completed in 1 year • Give careful consideration when you register for this module • Topics – scope • Proposals • Example in Module Guide • Due date: 13 February 2013 • Hand in: WWG309 • See requirements in Honours Project Guidelines 2013 • Procedure • Topic and scope will be evaluated • Feedback via email whether accepted / not (27/2/2013)
Android short course • Presented in 2nd Semester • Payment involved • Presented by an external lecturer More information will be given at the beginning of the 2nd semester
Masters • Admission Requirements: • B.Sc. Hons. or B.Com. Hons. Degree • 60% average for the degree • Choice between research and structured Masters • Research Master’s degree: Code 4792 • Dissertation (180 credits) = RIS700 • Structured Master’s degree: Code 4793 • Extended research essay (120 credits) = RIS791 • Plus 3 research modules
Structured Masters • Choose 3 modules from the following research areas: • RIS715 HCI Dr. De Wet • RIS725 Data warehousing and mining Dr.Kotzé • RIS730 Educational technology Dr.Nel • RIS731 Eye-tracking Dr.Beelders • The modules will be in the form of a literature study. • Except for RIS730, there will be no formal classes and no examination. You will choose a topic and then you must summarize from the literature all the work that has been done on the topic and identify a research project in terms of a problem statement. • Deliverable: A document consisting of an Introduction, Literature review, a Problem Statement and a Conclusion. You will be evaluated on this document.
Structured Masters • After passing the 3 modules: • You select one of your three research projects identified in the modules passed and then continue with that project towards an extended dissertation – RIS791 • Deliverable: Document in which you add additional literature resources (to those gathered in your previous literature review), the Research Hypotheses & Objective(s), Research Design & Methodology, Results & Data Analysis and Conclusions. • You will be evaluated on this document by your lecturer and an external examiner.
Structured Masters Structured Master’s in 1 year: • Three modules must be completed in 1st semester and dissertation (RIS791) must be completed in the 2nd semester Structured Master’s over 2 years: • Modules must all be completed before you can commence with RIS791 Choice of modules is dependent on whether they are presented in the 1st or 2nd semester. It will be revised every year based on the demand.
