  1. Magwitch revealed! Degrees of Agree Activity

  2. For each prompt… • Decide if you agree, disagree, somewhat agree or somewhat disagree • Provide evidence to support your stance • Be prepared to defend your answer with logical arguments

  3. #1 In terms of Magwitch’s life as a criminal, institutions are to blame. • Magwitch's mistreatment is institutionalized; he is not raised by a family but by society. These institutions – namely, jail, do not give him food or the opportunity for an education. Instead, Magwitch is treated like a criminal because he is a poor orphan and locked up. Society is to blame for making him a "varmint.”

  4. #2 Magwitch is not a sympathetic character • Sure, Magwitch may have suffered from hardships, but that does not make an excuse for his crimes.

  5. #3 Accepting money from Magwitch is worse than accepting money from Miss Havisham. • Consider the fact that Joe feels guilty about abandoning Joe for Magwitch, but doesn’t feel guilty about abandoning Joe for Miss Havisham. • Consider the source of the money, too, from both Magwitch and Miss Havisham.

  6. #4 Pip and Magwitch have a similary morality: they both believe that money can buy anything, even people.
