  2. Program Information • 5 levels of ESL available (Level A to E) • Regional site for the Literacy and Upgrading Programs (5 levels also available for both these programs • French offered at every grade level, applied and academic for Grade 9 and academic only for Grades 10, 11 and 12

  3. Advantages of the ESL Program • Students progress at their own pace • Students are in smaller classes • Students have extra time on final in-class or for exams held during the regular timetable • Students have more time and other accommodations for the OSSLT (Literacy test in Grade 10) • Students have access to “L” coded classes which are classes designed for ESL students

  4. Advantages of the ESL Program • ESL classes also enable students to develop paragraph and essay writing skills as they progress through the levels as required for post-secondary education • ESL students will also develop their reading comprehension skills in English

  5. Advantages of the ESL Program • ESL students also have the opportunities to further develop their listening and speaking skills in a supportive environment • Students also learn about Canada , its multiculturalism and its education system

  6. Advantages of the French Program • Students learn one of the two official languages in Canada • Students discover a different culture • Students develop connection making with their first language and other languages already known • Students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the importance of different languages

  7. Language Acquisition Information • It takes an average of 5 to 7 years to develop academic language skills in English • Conversation skills are developed more quickly than reading and writing skills • The development of reading skills is required for graduation and post-secondary education

  8. Language Acquisition Information • The reading skills for graduating require a more sophisticated vocabulary which takes time to develop • The development of writing skills also require a higher level of vocabulary along with the knowledge of a variety of writing forms

  9. Level of Difficulty • Students are placed in appropriate levels according to ability, not age • As students progress through the levels, more is expected from them in their reading, writing and speaking skills

  10. Pathways • ESL DO and ESL EO are exit courses to the regular English program • From these two ESL exit courses, students will register for the appropriate English course required for their further studies: ENG 1P/1D, ENG 2P/2D, ENG 3E,U,C/4E,U,C
