  40. The Second Phase: STORMING Intragroup Conflict Hostility may arise from expression of individuality Possible lack of unity Group members can react emotionally to the task

  41. Obstacles to Effective Teams • Groupthink • We’ve always done it this way! • The “Diva” • We’re going to do it my way…or …. • I’ll take my toys and go home!

  42. Scenario 1 • You’ve volunteered to lead a planning committee that includes the Section President You’ve met twice and at both meetings she dominated the discussion resulting in little contribution from others. What should you do? • A: When you ask for input, do a “round the room” response. • B: Have an off-line discussion with the President to ask her to quiet down and allow others to talk. • C: When you sense she’s dominating the conversation, strategically say “ I’d like to hear from someone else. Elsie – what do you think?” • D: Continue to allow her to have the floor – after all she is the Section President. • E: Other ideas?

  43. Scenario 2 • Your committee has to come up with new ideas to attract new members. When solicited for ideas, everyone is bringing up the same approaches you’ve used in the past with limited success. What should you do? • A: Research and try a new discussion technique (e.g. Outside observer log) • B: Use brainstorming with visioning kinds of statements (e.g. If you had a million dollars…) • C: Ask people to relate a personal experience – “Why did you come to your first SWE meeting?” • D: Solicit the help/services of a professional meeting facilitator. • E: Other ideas?

  44. The Third Phase: NORMING Mutual acceptance of members begins Establishment of group-generated norms A period of harmony Development of group cohesion Open exchange of relevant interpretations

  45. The Fourth Phase: PERFORMING • The team becomes a problem solving instrument • Subjective gives way to the Objective • Emergence of Solutions

  46. Credo of the Team Leader LEAD People MANAGE Tasks FACILITATE Decisions

  47. Members of an Effective Team Are open to new ideas Accept new members Possess diverse skills and interests Have relevant knowledge and experience Display team attitude
