The ASME SSA – Rewards, Expectations, and Roles Expectations (engage students, administer section): • Encourage ME/MET students to take advantage of ASME benefits, professional resources and competitions and become involved in their ASME student section • Foster Student Section activities and programs that stimulate interest in the profession and are a window to engineering practice for students • Make student members aware of the value of active membership in a global professional society (e.g. ASME). • Ensure student section administration is conducted effectively

The ASME SSA – Rewards, Expectations, and Roles Roles (engaging students): • Explain the Benefits of ASME Membership • Recruit Student Section Officers • Develop “School Year” meeting / program schedule & fundraising plan with Student Section Officers • Engage Industry for the benefit of the students • Attend the Student Leadership Seminar, and encourage >2 Student Section officers to attend • Attend Student Professional Development Conference in the Spring; encourage students to participate • Recognize Outstanding Contributions - Honors and Awards

SPDC Futures Team Charter • Develop a radically different approach to the ASME Student Professional Development Conferences (SPDC’s), and ASME Student Competitions so that they can: • Be more aligned with ASME’s strategic objectives • Be more aligned with design education objectives and practices in engineering/engineering technology degree programs • Be more cost effective while significantly expanding student participation • Better serve the needs of students and the educational goals of ME/MET Departments

SPDC Futures Team Recommendations Recommendation 1 - Immediate improvements to existing model, aimed at providing: Consistent base-line level of quality at all conferences with “above and beyond” excellence encouraged Value-added experience for all attendees. Recommendation 2 – Engineering Design Experience A few high quality face-to-face events Students at all levels attend – freshmen to seniors Complementary leadership and professional development activities. Recommendation 3 – Real World Design Challenge Authentic, industry-sponsored and humanitarian need-based design projects. (1-2 semester depth)

Recommendation 1 Improving Existing SPDCs - Actions Improve Existing SPDCs while new models are developed: • Transition Old Guard-sponsored competitions to a team-oriented approach. • Develop individual oral technical presentation competition: 3 -5 minute presentations with industry and peer judging. • Transition SDC an industry- or humanitarian-based challenge, open to all SPDC participants, with no preparation required. • Offer an array of professional development activities. • Establish a core team to provide training & guidance to hosts plus a host reward program

Recommendation 2 Engineering Design Experience Replace current SPDCs with fewer, higher quality face-to-face events: • 2 days, ‘retreat’ or ‘charrette’ based • Target audience is students at all levels – freshmen to seniors • Two main competitions • Design Review Competition • “Real-Time Design Challenge” provided by Industry, humanitarian NGO, faculty or ASME • No preparation - design challenge revealed at the event • Team-based • Culminates in presentation to panel of judges • Complementary Leadership and Professional Development activities

17. Recommendation 3 Real World Design Challenge • Authentic industry-sponsored and humanitarian need based design projects. • Collaborate with academia, government and industry to identify design challenges. • Basic concept: • Semester to one academic year in length/depth • Menu of design challenges or students can use their own senior design project. • On-line resources for collaboration and review • Periodic interaction with real world partners and experts • Culminates in 2-day, face-to-face exposition style events • Complementary Leadership and Professional Development activities

SPDC Futures Team – Next Steps • Transition Team (rec #1) forming this summer, in collaboration with ASME Centers for Education and Career & Professional Advancement • Develop new competitions • Provide increased guidance to hosts • 2 hosts to be selected to implement suggested improvements in 2011 (transition team) • Other 2011 hosts welcome to implement improvements • Futures Team forming fall 2010 to develop long-term conference ideas • Implementation in FY13 and FY14

19. Breaking ASME News Student Section Competition Update • Winning sections will receive prizes for FY10 competition • This competition is now phased out and is being replaced by Student Section Merit-Based Funding

Breaking ASME News Merit-Based Funding for Student Sections • Background: • The Student Sections Competition lost its corporate sponsor • Declining participation • MBF for sections has been successful • Funding level about $30,000. (payouts TBD) • Merit points awarded for: • Meetings - 40% (Section meetings, socials, tours, service projects, etc) • ASME participation - 35% (SLS – 15%, SPDC – 15%, HPVC – 5%, etc.) • Website - 10% (actively maintained) • Leadership - 10% (SDOB, LTC, leadership training, etc.) • Admin - 5% (financial report submitted / officers & SSA registered) • Based on Student Section activities from July 1 – June 30 • Long-term goal – an online data entry tool • Summary reports to District Leaders, SDOB Leaders

Resources: Student Liaison Program • Help bridge transition from student to ASME member • Early Career Engineers serve as ASME’s “ambassadors” to student sections in their local area • Student liaisons will visit the student section(s) at least once a year and speak about ASME and their career, to raise awareness of: • what ASME membership is • what opportunities are available to them • how to take advantage of ASME’s range of programs and benefits • Introduce graduating seniors to ASME members in their area • Work with SSA to identify where graduates are going • Make personal introduction to active local members
