  4. The Early Years • Father gave him his first camera • Brownie box camera by Kodak • Joined the Sierra Club • At age 17 • First photos published in 1921 • Contracted first portfolio, 1927 • New style • Included famous Monolith (right)

Adams dedicated his Portfolio VI to fellow artists, Gottardo Piazzoni and Edward Weston, "who encouraged me in so many ways to observe the beauty of the world and challenged me to express and interpret it through the medium of photography.”
