A little about Ansel Adams • Ansel Adams was born in San Francisco, California. • He was born February 20 1902 and died April 22 1984. • His father was Charles Hitchcock Adams, a business man • Ansel was an only child and his mother had him at nearly 40 years old • In 1906 the great earthquake and fire threw Adams to the ground, breaking his nose - so badly broken he could hardly fit in at school.

  3. Education • He was tutored by his aunt and father cause of his fitting in problem at school. • He earned a “legitimizing Diploma” from the Mrs. Kate M. Wilkins Private School. • The Sierra Club was important to the early stages of his photography success.

  4. Where his work appears • Started out at the Sierra Clubs 1922 bulletin. • his first series of technical articles was published in Camera Craft in 1934, and his first widely distributed book in 1935 • His work showed in magazines, portraits, catalogues, and museums.

  5. Style of his Photography • The style of photography he is known for is wilderness and environment. • He fought for new park and wilderness areas, he wanted clean air and water, and to help the endangered sea lions and sea otters.

  6. Influence and Inspiration • his great influence came from his photography. • But he got his inspiration from spending time in the woods and in the nature, then he started taking pictures and realized he wanted to help the environment and wilderness.

Some Facts • Though he loves nature and he cares about the environment, he never made a creative photograph specifically for environmental purposes. • In traditional art history, he was the last and defining figure in the romantic tradition of nineteenth-century American landscape painting and photography. • Different childhood from the joy he found in nature.

Photograph Q’s and A’s • White Branches: the lighting looks to be natural, and looks to be coming from the left and top. • The main subject is the white branch, it has the most light on it, the name of the photo and it is almost the center • The composition is the lighting shows what the subject is and it is still the main subject but he added a bit of the background which looks like a large body of water. • The story of this photo might be that it is a washed up piece of wood with a deer antler type look to it. Seems unique to me. • I selected this photo because I like the creativity and the thought of what the story might be like

  10. Continued… • Tetons and the Snake River: the lighting also looks to be coming from the left side. • the main subject I think is the River and how it is winding around the mountains. The lines of the photo are the river winding and the lines of the mountains, the lighting also reflect off the river to make it shine. • Story would be that it is enclosed and free. • I selected this photo because I like the way he thought of capturing it and getting to river to look like it was winding around the mountains.

Continued.. • Stream, Sea, Clouds: the lighting is coming from a distance, almost seems to be reflecting from the clouds onto the water making a shine look. • Main subject I think is the stream running to the sea. Going from a small subject to a larger subject. • The lighting is more on the stream then leads to the sea. • The story reminds me of a small child running towards their mother, after missing them. • I selected this photograph because it just seems free and happy.

  12. Continued… • Monolith: lighting seems to be from the bottom left, like the sun is setting. • The main subject I think is the snow on the mountains below and to the side of the face of the mountain and to show how far it is from the ground up. • Lines is definitely the face of the mountain.

  13. Continued… • Bishop Pass: the lighting used is natural because it was taken outside. • The main subject is the floor of the mountains and see where they meet. • The separating lines of the mountains and the ground.
