E N D
War • Dunkirk • Narrative • English and French at war and the English are stuck at Dunkirk and people are going to help them get out. • Target Audience • 20+years- the character the scene is focused on is fairly young. • Male- no women are seen in the first scene. • White race- all characters are white. • Genre of the film set up in the first sequence • History- you can tell by the vintage looking clothing that it is set in the past. • Drama-the scene is very striking and sudden. • Action-gunshots and fast-pace running. Opening scene:
Characters • The scene introduces us to one main male character. • We get the impression that he is desperate from the mid shot of him drinking from a hose. • Close-up shot of character holding leaflet which gives us an impression of the setting of Dunkirk. • Diegetic sound of gun fires at random times connotes danger and unsureness. • Moment of silence signifies peace and calmness but then gun shots are heard again which brings back feelings of distress and being unsafe. • I think the opening scene is effective as you can tell it is a war film by the mise-en-scene used in the opening scene. It also gives the audience a sense of the narrative of the film.
