  8. SYRIA • Eventually the unrest among younger Syrians reached the same level and they started to protest for better economic and working conditions and more freedom. • The protests started to become violent and led to an uprising against the Bashar al-Assad government

  13. DELIBERATION TIME • 1. Review the passages provided from the US Constitution. • A. What does the Constitution say about the role and powers of the US Congress in War Making? • B. What does the Constitution say about the role and powers of the US President in War making? • 2. Review the passages from the War Powers Resolution in 1973. How does the WPR impact the powers of Congress and the President over War Making?

Discuss – What was the intent of the Framers based on your reading of the words of the US Constitution? • Are the War Making Powers of the Congress and the President balanced? • If not balanced, which branch has more power over the decision to go to war? • Should they be balanced?

How have the nature of war changed over the last 30-40 years? • 5. Has the role of the US in the world changed at all in the last 30 years?

Would that be consistent with the WPR? • 9. What actions could Congress take if President Obama acted without their authorization / declaration?

  18. ASSESSMENT • Assignment – Use your time over the holiday on 9/5 to research and to think about the following two issues. On Friday, you will complete an FRQ writing on Globalization and ONE ISSUE below in which you take a stance and support your position on the issue. • 1.) Defend or Reject – The US needs to develop a new and better balanced system for deciding whether to make war against another country? • 2.) Defend or Reject – Based on the information at this point, the US is authorized to use military force against military targets in the al-Assad Regime in Syria.
