  1. Can you design a new Fairtrade snack for the nation?

  2. Your team must invent a new Fairtrade snack for the nation • Come up with a new snack idea • Invent a name for it • Design the packaging • Design a marketing campaign to promote it • Show what market research you have done in a graph • Work out your costs

  3. 1. Come up with a new snack idea • You will get a chance to taste test new food from around the world. What flavours go well together, to make a unique new snack? • The product must be a ‘bagged snack’ or bar • The product must qualify for Fairtrade certification so must use Fairtrade ingredients where possible

  4. 1. Come up with a new snack idea Fruit: raisins, apricots, blueberries, bananas, mangos, dates and sultanas. Nuts and beans: brazil nuts, cashew nuts, almonds, peanuts, walnuts, cocoa beans (chocolate – milk, white, dark) and coffee beans. Other: sugar and all products made of sugar, crisped rice, yoghurt coating, honey, candied ginger.

  5. 2. Invent a name for it This should be catchy and it’s best to avoid trademark names belonging to other companies (e.g. Smarties)

  6. 3. Design the packaging It doesn’t have to look like this, but this gives you an idea of some of the things you might include

  7. 3. Design the packaging Some other examples of Fairtrade packaging

  8. 4. Design a marketing campaign to promote it • How are you going to advertise your new product? This could include: • A poster or billboard, • A magazine or newspaper advert • A TV, internet or radio advert • Any other form of advertising you like!

  9. 5. Market Research Within your class, try to find out what flavours, ingredients and textures are popular or not. Record this in an excel spreadsheet and make a graph of the results

  10. 6. Costs! The Managing Director must present the costs. Use the spreadsheet to help you, and make sure you get all your receipts signed in the Food Market.

  11. You will be judged on: •Innovation (it’s your own, original, creative idea – or an existing idea that you have adapted as a Fairtrade product for Traidcraft) • Fairtrade content (it will help producers trade their way out of poverty) • Appeal of the product (sounds tasty!) • Visual appeal of the packaging (looks good) • Understanding of Fairtrade • Understanding of product design and marketing • The ethical and environmental values conveyed through the competition entry

  12. Roles Managing Director You do the costs and you are in charge! You decide what everyone does, help those who need it and make the final decisions if there is an argument. Whether your team does well in the task is ultimately up to you. Marketing Directors You will direct the marketing campaign, whether it is a poster, TV or radio advert or something completely different. You must also do the market research graph. Product Designers You will produce the product ingredient list and design the front and back of the packaging.
