  2. It would be impossible to find any type of information on the World Wide Web (WWW) without a reliable search engine. Blekko is a new age search engine that makes it extremely easy to find the relevant information on the web. • There are billions of websites on the WWW. Search engines are the instruments that let us find quickly what we are looking for on the internet with minimum of hassle or wastage of time. • Each website has a particular and unique URL associated with it. This URL, in fact is the website’s address. Like mentioned above, there are billions of websites on WWW. • It would rather be impossible for an average human brain to memorize the address of few dozens of them. This is where the search engine comes into play. It would be next to impossible to find specific information on the net without the help of a quality search engine. • In the following section, we shall look at how a search engine works and see for ourselves how a judicious selection of search engine can help users get what they want without exposing them to any online fraud or cheating.

  3. How Search Engines Work? • There are basically three types of search engines. Look at them one by one and find out which can serve your purpose the best. • Crawler Based Search Engine • Crawler based search engines use special software to visit different websites. They scrutinize the content of the website, read its meta tags, and find information about the links coming and going from the website. • Meta tags are special Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) tag that provide some very important information to the crawler. It tells the crawler what the page is all about, who created it, how often is it updated, and which keywords represent the content of the page, among others.

  4. Meta tags are very important, as a great amount of emphasis is laid on them by search engine crawlers while indexing the websites. • These automated programs called crawlers after arming themselves with all the relevant information about websites return to the central depositary where the data is indexed. • The crawler at regular intervals returns to the website to find out if the website has undergone any upgradation or whether any changes have been made to it. • Here, we are talking about indexing. This means that whenever any query is typed into the search box of the search engine, it is the indexes created by the crawlers that are tapped into to find the specific information queried by the user. • In fact, this is the reason why hundreds of thousands of results are displayed by the search engine in a fraction of a second. They do not have to search the web, but their own indexed databases for the information.

  5. There is, however, one potential downfall to it. We sometimes get dead links displayed on the result pages of some major search engines. This happens because the page may have been active when it was indexed and became invalid after the indexing procedure was complete. • Human Based Search Engine • Human based search engines rely completely on human expertise and submission for their cataloging and indexing. Only the information submitted by net users is put into the index. • Hybrid Search Engine • These are search engines that are an amalgamation of both sophisticated algorithm and human expertise. They are the best, as they seem to combine the best of both worlds for quick and relevant results.

  6. How Blekko works? • It is a new age sophisticated search engine that relies on human expertise as much as it does on its sophisticated algorithms to get the best and most relevant results for its users. • This new-age search engine makes use of end users' experience and volunteers expertise to categorize the web in an effort to offer comprehensive protection to its users from spams, malwares, and other scams perpetrated on net by fraudsters.

  7. "We're trying to use the Wikipedia approach to categorize the Web, bringing large-scale human curation to search not on a search-by-search basis but a category-by-category basis," Mike Markson, Blekko's vice president of marketing and one of the company's cofounders, told in an interview to a major magazine. • Websites are selected and organized around a single topic. This effectively narrows down the search, thereby presenting the users with only the most trusted and reliable websites.

  8. Conclusion • Using a search engine that prefers quantity over quality could be an extremely frustrating experience for an internet search engine user. • Time is a precious commodity and no end user wants to wade through dozens of dysfunctional, dead, harmful, or irrelevant links to get what he wants. • Spamdexing is on the rise and every day we hear stories about innocent and unsuspecting users falling prey to evil designs of online charlatans. Blekko is a search engine that makes use of both algorithms and human experience to deliver spam free results.
