Timeline • June 28, 1914 • Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian Nationalist in Sarajevo. • July 28, 1914 • Austria declared war on Serbia • August 1, 1914 • Germany declared war on Russia • August 3, 1914 • Germany declared war on France • May 23, 1915 • Italy declared war on Germany and Austria • September 25, 1915 • Start of the Battle of Loos • April 29, 1916 • Start of the Battle of Verdun • May 31, 1916 • Battle of Jutland • June 4, 1916 • Start of the Brusilov Offensive • April 6, 1917 • USA declared war on Germany • July 31, 1917 • Start of the Third Battle at Ypres • March 3, 1918 • The Treaty of Brest- Litovsk was signed between Russia and Germany • June 28, 1918 • The Treaty of Versailles was signed by the Germans.

  3. June 28, 1914 Assassination of Franz Ferdinand • Franz Ferdinand age 51 was heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire. He was married to Sophie Chotek von Chotvoka and had three children. On his visit to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovnia, Franz and Sophie were on their way to inspect the Austro-Hungarian troops that were there. When they were assassinated by a guy named Gavrilo Princip. He fired two shots, the first shot hit the pregnant Sophia in the stomach, she died instantly. The second shot hit the Archduke in the neck, he died a short while later. Gavrilo Princip was arrested but was not executed cause he was under the age of 20 years old. He was sentenced to 20 years of prison where he died of TB in 1918.

  4. Year 1914 • July 28th The Great War which started on July 28th with Austria-Hungary’s declaration of war with Serbia, was the first truly global war. It started in Europe but spread quickly throughout the world. • August 1st Germany declared war on Russia. Russia had mobilized along the German border. Russia’s mobilization amounted to a declaration of war on August 1st. • August 3rd Germany declared war on France. A conflict that all the major nations of Europe planned for but that none actually believed would never occur.

  5. Year 1915 • May 23 Italy declared war on Germany and Austria. When Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary. The Italian declaration opened up a new front in World War 1, stretching 600 kilometers. Most of them mountainous along Italy’s border with Austria. • September 25 Start of the Battle of Loos. Battle of Loos formed a part of the wider Artois-Loos conducted by the French and British in autumn 1915.

  6. Year 1916 • April 29th Start of the Battle of Verdun. Battle of Verdun was one of the longest single battle of World War 1. The causalities from Verdun and the impact the battle had on the French Army was a main reason for the British to start the Battle of the Somme. • May 31st Battle of Jutland. Was one the greatest naval battle of the first World War. Jutland had all the things to be a great British naval victory but in the event the result was less clear-cut. • June 4th The Brusilov Offensive. The Brusilov Offensive was nearly a major success in a war that had been a disaster for the Russians up to that year.

  7. Year 1917 • April 6th USA declared war on Germany. On April 2nd President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress for a declaration of war against Germany, on April 6th Congress granted the request and the United States was formally at war with Germany. • July 31st Start of the Third Battle at Ypres. Third Ypres was intended as Sir Douglas Haig’s Allied forces breakthrough in Flanders in 1917.

  8. Year 1918 • March 3rd The Treaty of Brest- Litovsk was signed between Russia and Germany. In the city of Brest-Litovsk Russia signs a treaty with the Central Powers ending its participation in World War 1. • June 28th The Treaty of Versailles was signed by the Germans.
