  1. Nevada Leadership Academy Sponsored by: NevAEYC and the Reno Association for the Education of Young Children

  2. What is the Leadership Academy? • An intensive program to foster new leaders in the early childhood field • 12 Emerging Leaders • 12 Mentors to support the emerging leaders • 8 months (2012-2013) - one Saturday per month

  3. Academy Goals • Provide Nevada Registry approved trainings free of charge for emerging leaders • Increase the quality of Child Care through emerging leader projects • Foster the growth of mentorship within AEYC and ECE community

Academy Goals cont. • Create a “well defined, multifaceted leadership pathway” and “entry point” for emerging leaders within AEYC (NAEYC vision 2015) • Increase interest in AEYC membership and board positions • Recruitment and retention of emerging leaders (NAEYC vision 2015) • Promote the expanded development of the professional status of individuals in various roles in the ECE field (NAEYC vision 2015)

  5. Who are the Emerging Leaders? • ECE teachers • Directors • Support staff (van drivers, cooks…etc) • ECE students • Anyone currently in the field interested in becoming more involved in a leadership role

  6. Emerging Leader Responsibilities • Attend the leadership mixer • Attend 8 scheduled leadership trainings • Complete an Early Childhood project • Meet with mentors one time per month • Provide a visual depiction of their project experience at the NevAEYC 2013 conference and/or… • Option to present at the 2013 conference • Attend a local or state AEYC board meeting

What will Emerging Leaders Gain? • 48 hours of leadership training • A mentor with similar interests • NAEYC membership • Assistance completing a project that they are passionate about • Books and materials chosen specifically for the Academy • Registration to the 2013 conference • Networking with other emerging leaders • Pathways into AEYC leadership roles

  8. Who are the Mentors? • AEYC board members • Leaders in the ECE community

  9. Mentor Responsibilities • Work with one emerging leader for the duration of the leadership academy • Attend a mentor training (3-4 weeks prior to the beginning of the Academy) • Meet with your emerging leader 1 time per month over an 8 month period • Provide guidance and support to emerging leader as they work towards their project completion and individual goals

  10. Leadership Academy Outline • Held August 2012 – April 2013 • Meet one Saturday per month for 8 months • Each Saturday will be 6 hours of The Nevada Registry approved training

  11. Academy Dates August 17th 6 pm – 8 pm Mixer • September 15th 9 am – 3:30 pm • October 13th 9 am – 3:30 pm • November 3rd 9 am – 3:30 pm • December 1st 9 am - 3:30 pm • January 12th 9 am – 3:30 pm • February 9th 9 am – 3:30 pm • March 16th 9 am – 3:30 pm • April 6th All Day - conference

Agenda – proposed topics • Tribute to self – a day of self reflection and planning • Communication styles / Leadership styles • Power and its uses (what do you do with your leadership) / Leading with compassion • Professionalism • State and national perspectives on ECE programs, issues and working towards solutions • Advocacy • Funding and Budgeting • Pathways to Leadership (AEYC, T.E.A.C.H., etc) • Project presentations

  13. What is “The Project”? • Emerging Leader chooses a topic in ECE that they are passionate about (nutrition, play, music, etc…) and plan a project around it • Something tangible that will benefit: their growth, center (or home care), and/or the ECE field • Project info will be shared within the first two sessions of the Academy and leaders will work to develop and implement their project by the last Saturday Academy session
