  3. O4O FOCUS: - volunteering; creating and implementing a volunteering model - implementing innovative co-operation in villages - creating a positive attitude towards the ageing society

  4. PLACE OF FRIENDSHIP Nurmes a social meeting place and activity centre for (elderly) citizens 1) How to get volunteers 2) How to keep them 3) How to find the lonely elderly 4) How to implement similar activities in Valtimo and Koli

  5. Future outcomes: - training program and handbook for volunteers helping the elderly with memory problems - program for the elderly at the risk of social exclusion - model of meeting place activities - new co-operation models: municipalities & NGOs & NKUAS

VUONISLAHTI Village • 250 inhabitants, 30 km from city centre • Active village: tourism, summer theatre, Village News, NGOs, international co-operation… • Village House Kukko, co-operative: meals, massage treatment, hairdresser • Municipal group family day care for children • Private nursing home • Group transportation on Mondays and Fridays • No school, no shop (at the moment) • http://www.vuonis.net/sivut/english.htm

  8. 21 INTERVIEWS: • ”village boss” as a key informant • Interviews in homes or in the Village house • thematic interviews by a student living in the neighbouring village • 7 male / 14 female – eight refused • Age 60 – 85 years • 13 couples; two males and six females living alone

  9. 76 % need help at the moment • Mostly in outdoor work in the yard, shopping and cleaning • helpers: relatives (daughters & sons), entrepreneur, friend • 57 % helping others: transportation, snow-clearing, wood-chopping, neighbourly help • 95 % will need more help in next 5 years • 76 % want to stay at home in Vuonislahti & 24 % think they will be obliged to move

  14. WEAKNESSES • Lack of resources; time and staff •  Delays in implementation •  Difficulties in involving people and organizations •  Economic crises

  15. THREATS • Economic crises • Not involving the elderly themselves • Weak linking with the authorities, NGOs and private service providers • Weak linking with regional ageing policy strategies • Tiredness of several project start ups

  16. OPPORTUNITIES 1/2 • Perfect timing • Nordic welfare state / the government looking for new welfare mix models; voucher, 3rd sector… • New models to volunteer • Economic crises; “Never lose a good crises”
