  2. Subject • The first noun position is called the subject. • This can be defined as the “doer” of the sentence. • Ask the question “Who is doing the action?” • The dog sat down. • In most situations, the subject will be placed ahead of the main verb.

  3. Direct Object/Compound Object Nouns • The 2nd noun position is called the direct object. • This can be defined as: • The noun that receives the action. • It usually can be found after the verb. • I like pizza. • Martina loves the pool. • Sometimes there can be more than two objects. That’s called Compound Object Nouns

  4. Indirect Object • This can be defined as: • A noun that receives the direct object. • This will work with giving verbs such as: • Gave, bought, sold, brought, drew, mailed, told, made, cooked, sent, taught, caught, baked • He gave Eddie a noogie. • She mailed her boyfriend a letter. • I sold Gina a cookie.

  5. Noun Positions • The 4th noun position is called object of the preposition. • What is a preposition? • A preposition is a word which shows the relation of a noun/pronoun to some other word in the sentence. • In other words, it gives the position of the noun (i.e. The book is on the table)‏

  6. Object of the Preposition • Any part of the sentence that contains a preposition and a noun, that is called a prepositional phrase. • Example: • I am at school. (at= preposition, at school= prepositional phrase)‏ • She is under water.

  7. Noun Position • 5th Noun Position • Predicate Nouns • These are nouns that do 2 things • Follows a linking verb (i.e. am/is/are, was/were)‏ • Explains the subject noun • Example • Our English teacher is Mr. Alex. • My favorite sport is basketball.

  8. Adjectives • What are adjectives? • A part of speech that describes the noun/pronoun. • Where can adjectives be places? • Either before the noun (i.e. Red rose)‏ • After the noun (i.e. The rose is red)‏

  9. Adjective Rules • Adjectives can change, here are some basic rules. • When an adjective is comparing two nouns, then you add “-er” to the end of the adjective. • This rose is redder than that rose. • This is called a comparative adjective

  10. Adjective Rules • When an adjective is comparing three or more, then you add “-est” to the end of the adjective • This is the reddest rose out of the bunch. • This is called a superlative adjective

  11. Adjective Rules • 1st Rule • If an adjective ends with a “vowel-consonant” combination, then double the consonant and add “er” or “est” • Red • Redder/Reddest • Big • Bigger/Biggest

  12. Adjective Rules • 2nd Rule • If an adjective ends with “e” then add “r” or “st” • Gentle • Gentler/Gentlest • Wide • Wider/Widest • Beige • Beiger/Beigest

  13. Adjectives Rules • 3rd Rule • If the adjective ends with a “y,” replace it with “-ier” or “-iest” • Silly • Sillier/Silliest • Funny • Funnier/Funniest

  14. Adjective Rules • 4th Rule • If the adjective is 3 syllables or more, use “more” or “most” before the adjective. • Beautiful • More beautiful/ Most beautiful • Horrible • More horrible/ Most horrible

  15. 5th Rule • Irregular Adjectives • Good • Better/Best • Bad • Worse/Worst

  16. Test Time • Except for Sarah 2 and Joanne, everyone else is re-taking the test • Sarah 2 and Joanne, you are going to answer the following questions about the reading.

  17. Reading Question • Who was Miss Doyle following? (pg 7)‏ • Can you describe Mr. Grummage? What is his personality like? What was he wearing? (pg 7)‏ • Who was Miss Doyle’s chaperon? (8)‏ • What kind of things did Charlotte Doyle see at the dock? (8)‏
