New York Blood Center (NYBC) New York Blood Center (NYBC) is a non-profit organization that supports approximately 200 area hospitals, providing needed blood and blood components for the 18 million people in the New York/ New Jersey metropolitan area. NYBC is also a world leader in hematology, clinical services and transfusion science, conducting both basic and applied research in these important fields. Because of this leadership position, NYBC not only develops and distributes innovative blood products and services; it also provides comprehensive training, public education and medical services for both health care professionals and the community. Building Relationships in Diverse Communities • Become familiar with the culture • Details of population (Demographics, music, language, etc) • Dynamics of the culture (How to make things happen) • History regarding blood donations DO NOT ASSUME THAT ALL CULTURES ARE THE SAME • Display a genuine and well planned approach/ interest • Maintain an open line of communication • Be respectful of cultural differences • Have patience in result expectations

  9. Increase in First Time Donors NYBC had an average of 16.5% first time donors per drive in 2008. Harlem’s Children Zone (February 24, 2009): Blood Drive Results 43 Donors Registered 32 Donations Received 18 were first time donors (56%) 10 were first time Black donors (31%)
