  1. Section 12 – 2 Translations Objectives: To describe translations using vectors To find translation images using vector sums

  2. Translation: Slide

  3. Example 1 Translations Using Vectors A) Find the image of T under the translation described by the vector . B) Find the vector that describes the translation S → U.

  4. C) Find the image of Q under the translation described by the vector . D) Find the vector that describes the translation T → S.

  5. Each vector, , maps each (x, y) pair to (x + a, y + b). Symbolically, (x, y) → (x + a, y + b)

  6. Example 2 Writing a Rule to Describe a Translation A) Write a rule to describe the translation PQRS→P’Q’R’S’.

  7. B) Use the rule (x, y) → (x + 7, y – 1) to find the translation image of ∆LMN.

  8. C) Write a rule to describe the translation ∆ABC→∆A’B’C’.

  9. D) Use the rule (x, y) → (x + 3 y + 2) to find the translation image of the given triangle.

  10. Composition: A combination of two or more transformations.

  11. Example 3 Compositions A) Yolanda Perez is visiting San Francisco. From her hotel near Union Square, she walks 4 blocks east and 4 blocks north to the Wells Fargo History Museum to see a stagecoach and relics of the Gold Rush. Then she walks 5 blocks west and 3 blocks north to the Cable Car Barn Museum. Now how many blocks is she from her hotel.

  12. B) Tritt rides his bicycle 3 blocks north and 5 blocks east of a pharmacy to deliver a prescription. Then he rides 4 blocks south and 8 blocks west to make a second delivery. How many blocks is he now from the pharmacy?
