  4. Podcasts and Archaeology • Archaeology is a visual and sensory subject. • However, teaching that engages all the senses is v. effective: • V = Visual • A = Audio • R = Read/Write • K = Kinaesthetic

  5. Example: Lectures • In Archaeology, lectures provide a spoken narrative on visual media: • Slides/Powerpoint • Artefacts • On-line, with the visual media, allows students to recreate, and reflect on the full lecture experience.

  6. Example: Fieldtrips • Fieldtrips are under threat, but hard to combine with ICT. • Podcasts help: • Deliver accurate information to large groups • Make use of dead-time on the bus. • Provide multiple interpretations

  7. Example: Artefact-based • CONTACT Project • Advantages: • Multi-modal learning • Uses restricted objects • Relate pots to sherds • 24/7 access to museum materials • Collections On-line: • BM, Petrie Museum • Needs set exercises

  8. Example: Independent Learning • Podcasts are ‘content rich’ and stimulating. • Examples: • eMI GLO • Open University • Crumbing Down…

  9. Example: Professional skills • Audio-Guides are now an essential feature of museum/site management (e.g. accessibility) • Students can create an audio-guide for their case-study site and examine issues of narrative construction and develop communication.
