BUS TEST FLEETSCapital Program Oversight CommitteeMarch, 2011 Department of Buses
Goals • Test different fleets of buses to create competition for new bus purchases in order to deliver better performing buses at the lowest cost. • Key test program criterion include: • Reliability • Fuel economy • Maintainability • Vendor support • Production timeliness & quality
Implementation • Procure seven test fleets of 90 buses each: • Three different fleets of standard diesel buses. • Two different fleets of artic buses. • One fleet of express buses. • One fleet of turbine buses as an alternative propulsion system by a new manufacturer.
Status Standard Diesel Buses • Nova • This project was awarded in December, 2010. • The first bus will be delivered in March, 2011 and the last bus is expected to be delivered by June, 2011.
Status Standard Diesel Buses • Daimler • The expected award for this project is March, 2011. • The first bus is expected to be delivered in September, 2011 and the last bus is expected to be delivered by December, 2011.
Status Standard Diesel Buses • New Flyer • The expected award for this project is March, 2011. • The first bus is expected to be delivered in July, 2011 and the last bus is expected to be delivered by December, 2011.
Status Artic Buses • Nova • Project was awarded in May, 2009 and all buses were received as of June, 2010. • Results of the evaluation indicate the following: • Improved MDBF reliability. • Fuel economy up 25% over current articulated buses. • NYCT will procure an additional 328 Nova artic’s based on these results. • Nova is the only structurally qualified manufacturer of articulated buses at this time.
Status Artic Buses • New Flyer • Board approval to award this project will be requested in June, pending pre-qualification of bus on shaker table. • Qualification of this bus will permit competition for upcoming articulated bus procurements.
Status Express Buses • Prevost • Project was awarded in January, 2011. • The pilot bus is expected to be delivered in July, 2011 and the last bus is expected to be delivered by January, 2012.
Status Turbine Buses • DesignLine • Based on their performance, it was determined that these buses are not reliable to proceed with a larger evaluation. • All monies related to the initial test fleet of 8 buses have been returned to the MTA in accordance with the contract.
Next Steps • Award and evaluate all remaining test fleets. • Continue to solicit the participation of other manufacturers. • Apply “lessons learned” and expand competition on future bus procurements. • Explore new technologies, such as a full electric bus.
