  2. Hechos Culturales Gyms School gyms are rare in Spanish-speaking countries. Students usually have physical education classes in the school’s patio (playground). High School students usually have P.E. one or two times a week, sometimes before or after regular school hours. School sports teams are also less common than in the U.S. Since there are few school-based sports teams, many young people join private gyms for individual exercise or play for privately sponsored teams in order to compete in their favorite sports.

Hechos Culturales Food • Think about how your meals would be different without corn, beans, squash, tomatoes, limes, avocados, chiles, peanuts, cashews, turkey, pineapples, yams, potatoes, vanilla, and chocolate. All of these foods had their origin in the Americas and were unknown in Europe until Columbus brought them there from his voyages in the fifteenth century. Today these foods are found in dishes in many countries. The exchange of food benefited both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The Europeans brought to the Americas a wide range of foods including chicken, pork, beef milk, cheese, sugar, grapes, and grains such as wheat and barley.

  10. Hechos Culturales Restaurants • Getting a server’s attention at a restaurant in a Spanish-speaking country sometimes differs from how it is done in other cultures. For example, in Costa Rica people often make a pfft sound to get a server’s attention, while in Colombia people may raise or clap their hands. Be very careful in using this sort of attention-getting device-it may seem rude when done by someone from outside the culture!
