  1. The following sentence is grammatically correct. Yes/No/Why?Holiday break is only 18 days away, it will be so nice to sleep in for a week!!

  2. A Weeee Little Writing Mini Lesson . . . Comma Splices . . . What NOT to write . . .

  3. A COMMA SPLICE is when a comma (alone) INCORRECTLY t-r-i-e-s to connect two independent clauses together.

  4. A comma (alone) can NEVER, EVER connect two independent clauses together. Never, ever, ever. Ever, ever.

  5. Ever, ever.

  6. There are a variety of ways that a writer can “fix” a comma splice (c/s):

  7. Make two separate independent clauses by adding a period and a capital letter: Holiday break is only 18 days away. It will be so nice to sleep in for a week!!

  8. 2. Add a comma and a coordinating conjunction: Holiday break is only 18 days away, and it will be so nice to sleep in for a week!!

  9. 3. Add a semi colon: Holiday break is only 18 days away; it will be so nice to sleep in for a week!!

  10. Now you try:

  11. Fix ‘em up: Period 1 is so much fun, I just made a rhyme.

  12. Fix ‘em up: Period 2 is very spiritual, Owen are you praying again??

  13. Fix ‘em up: Period 3 are my sweeties, Agbola stop smiling . . .

  14. Fix ‘em up: Period 4 is quite vivacious, it is never a dull class.
