  3. William Lloyd Garrison- most outspoken white abolitionist. - “The Liberator” (anti slavery newspaper) Frederick Douglass- most well known black abolitionist. “The North Star” (anti slavery newspaper)

  4. F. Underground Railroad: network of abolitionists who helped runaway slaves. Harriet Tubman – most successful conductor. John Brown- violent abolitionists. -Harpers Ferry

  5. Causes of the Civil War: • Slavery • Industrialized North vs. Agrarian South • Economic and Tariffs

  6. Compromise of 1850 (p.479) • Fugitive Slave Act- citizens to catch runaway slaves ($1000 fine, 6 mos. in jail) • D. Uncle Toms Cabin- Harriet Beecher Stowe (1852) E. Kansas- Nebraska Act (1854) (west expansion) –popular sovereignty

  7. F. Dred Scott Decision (1857) • -ruled that slaves are not citizens • G. Sectionalism- loyalty to sections of the country. H. States Rights 1. Election of 1860- Abraham Lincoln

  8. IV. Confederate States of America • - Jefferson Davis- president of the Confederacy • V. The Civil War • A. Strengths and Weaknesses (p, 512-513) • B. Border States- slave states that did not leave the union. • C. Emancipation Proclamation- freed all slaves in states in rebellion.

  9. D. Gettysburg Address- speech dedicated to the Union Cemetery. • E. Reconstruction- rebuilding then south.
