  3. Windows Server 2008 Launch • March Price List – Windows Server 2008 Licenses • April Price List – Windows Server 2008 Media (DVD) • Removed: • External Connectors • Did not really fit into the SPLA licensing model – confused Service Providers • Anonymous Standard / Enterprise • Datacenter anonymous remains

  4. Windows Server 2008 Launch (ct’ed) • Added: • OEM PL (for OEM version of WS08 pre-installed on the server) • Was often requested to complete the offer • Non-Virtualization offer for Standard/Enterprise/Datacenter editions • Hyper-V technology removed • Lower price • Changed: • Windows Server Web Edition remains • Use rights changes • New Activation process

  5. Transition from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 • If deploying Windows Server 2003 can keep reporting WS2003 SKUs • If deploying Windows Server 2008 must report SKUs on current price list (no anonymous SKUs) Windows Server 2003 Windows Standard Anonymous $18 Windows Enterprise Anonymous $25 Windows Server 2008 Windows Server Standard $145 Windows Server Enterprise $194 Windows Web Server $10 Windows DataCenter $50 Prices are examples only – SPLA Resellers set SPLA prices

You just need to License above the ‘included’ free licenses.

  10. Windows Server Datacenter 2008 • $50 per physical processor • Allows for unauthenticated access to the server (no Active Directory authentication) • Unlimited Virtualization • In virtual machines you can run Datacenter/Enterprise/Standard/Web edition • Increased scalability, memory, quantity of processors and clustering make it a great choice for service providers

  19. SPLA Managed Desktop

  20. SPLA Managed Desktop Option • The SPLA Managed Desktop optionallows Microsoft partners to provide managed services on customer premises and with local installed Microsoft licenses on the customers’ Desktop or Laptop • This option also gives the partner the opportunity to rent besides Office, Visio, Project applications also the desktop operating system Windows Vista Business (N) Upgrade on the Desktop and / or Laptop it self • Requirements: • The Managed Desktop option requires the services provider to own and manage the hardware devices that are installed at the end customer site.  It is not possible for the end customer to own the device.  This is because of the potential risk for unlicensed software to remain on the desktops should the end customer and the services providers sever their business relationship • When the partner purchases the PC it needs to be preinstalled with Windows OEM licenses of either: • Windows 2000 Professional, • Windows XP Professional or • Windows Vista Business

  21. Licensing SPLA Managed Desktop • The Managed Desktop option overrides anything to the contrary in the OEM EULA that says you cannot rent, loan, lease or lend.  • What that means is that if you acquire Windows Vista under SPLA, then you can provide it on devices that you then make available to your customers on rental, host or subscription basis.  • It does require you to report and pay for a monthly license for Windows Vista Business under SPLA for these devices • The license fee includes the right to rent / lease the software and the right to upgrade the underlying OEM Windows Operating System to Windows Vista Business • Pricing: Normal SPLA pricing per user / month for Office, Visio, Project (see SPLA price list) • Examples: • Office 2007 Professional Plus: $13.23 per month • Project 2007 Standard: $13.35 per month • Separate pricing for Windows Vista Business: $6.72 per month • Windows Vista Business media cost: $20.00 • Special academic pricing (for schools, universities etc.) is available

  22. TCO Sample Calculation • Scenario: TCO of an advanced business Desktop PC (36 months renting term) • Hardware Cost: • Dell VostroTM 400 ($ 509.00 / 36) $ 14.14 (Windows Vista Business OEM included) • License Cost: • Windows Vista Business $ 6.72 • Office 2007 Std. $ 13.23 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Total per PC per month $ 34.09 • Total per PC (36 months) $ 1,227.24 • All prices as per November 2007 – subject to change

  23. Recap • Use SPLA Licensing Program if you want to rent or lease Desktop PCs or Laptops to your customer • Report under SPLA Windows and/or Office based on the montly usage
