  1. Knowledge is power and product knowledge can increase both customer service and sales. It is frustrating for customers to deal with company staff members who do not know or understand the products it sells or the value add given. How well do you know your product? A recent survey of Howden associates revealed the following: 5 Associates per function were asked a simple question: “What products does Howden sell?” Many associates believed that Howden sold fans only. No indication was given of the type of fan and many associates did not know about any other products. Some associates said that Howden is a manufacturing company for mines! Revolving Around You

  2. Howden Products One of the many products Howden designs and manufacture is Main Surface Fans. See illustration below: Main Surface Fans The definition of a fan is a product with rotating blades that creates a current of air for cooling and ventilation. From the definition there are two critical functions. To provide cooling for miners underground and to provide the miners with clean air and ventilation. As miners descend underground the temperature increases and it becomes extremely hot. The fans provide continuous cooling for the miners making their work underground bearable. Equipment and natural gasses underground create toxic gasses which are harmful to individuals. The fans provide sufficient clean air to breath. Both of these functions determine how big the fan is going to be. Booster fans are located within the airways of the mine to boost air to working areas. The combination of the main surface and booster fans allow the mine to be cooled and ventilated as required. The Main Surface Fan shown on the left  is known as a trifurcation where  “tri” is a numerical prefix meaning three fans working in parallelas depicted in the image as 1,2 and 3. • The marketing department invites you to collect product brochures which will help you increase your product knowledge.
