  6. September 28, 2012 (B Day) Agenda: • DSJ #6 • Number and highlight all DSJs and DSRs • Assessment Results – Microscope Quiz • Finish Foldable • DSR #6

  7. DSJ #6 • Prompt: Read Standard 1: Cell Biology on page 5B of your notebook and your notes on page 14A. Think about what you’ve learned about cells. Write a paragraph summarizing what you know. • (Put this on page 14B)

  8. Cells

  9. Standard Cell Biology: 7.1 All living organisms are composed of cells, from just one to many trillions, whose details usually are visible only through microscope.

  10. Learning Objective SWBAT understand that the nucleus is the repository (storage/container) for genetic information (DNA) in plant and animal cells. SWBAT understand that DNA is packaged in the form of chromosomes, and chromosomes are stored in the nucleus. SWBAT understand the difference from plant and animal cells

  11. Organelle Notes • Cell Theory: • All living things are made up of cells. • Cellsare the basic units of structureand functionof ALL living things. • ALL cellsare produced from other cells.

  12. Organelles • Organelles: carry out specific functions (jobs) within the cell. • Organelles we must know. • Nucleus • Chloroplast • Cell Wall • Cell Membrane • Mitochondria

  13. Nucleus • Nucleus: stores the genetic material (DNA), and controlsand directsthe cell’s activities. • Nucleusis in BOTHplant and animal cells • Chromosomeis a double rod of condensed chromatin and is where DNAis stored. • Genetic information is the same thing as DNA

  14. Plant Cells • In Plant CellsONLY: • Chloroplasts are green organelles that captureenergy from the sun to produce food for the cell. • Cell Wall is a rigid (rough and tough) layer of material that surrounds the cells of plants. • Helps to protectand supportthe cell.

  15. Chloroplasts

  16. Cell Wall Cell Wall

  17. Plant Cell • More rectangular shape than animal cell

  18. Animal Cell • More round shape

  19. DSR #6 • Prompt: What do chromosomes and DNA have in common? Where are chromosomes stored at? What role does DNA have in the nucleus? • (Put this on page 14B under DSJ #6)
